By Rosalind Russell – Elliot Lake council reluctantly gave its unanimous consent to spending another half-a-million dollars on the Roger’s Arena.
After about an hour of discussion at Monday night’s meeting, council agreed to an additional $344,000 for a foundation design and work change, and an additional $200,000 for a contingency fund.
Manager of Special Projects Bill Goulding detailed design changes as recommended by the company Timber Restoration Services.
The company is recommending installing two large, continuous pile caps (one for each side of the arena) and that also includes an additional 90 cubic metres of concrete as well as more rebar reinforcement.
Mayor Andrew Wannan stated council took on the task to salvage the building and knew they were going in blind as to what work would need to be done, but the rehabilitation of the facility is still on track.
He adds this is the process, and even with the disappointments and setbacks, the goal is to get the arena back to a functioning status.
With the approval, Timber Restoration Services will undertake the new foundation design.
