By Rosalind Russell – Espanola High School is off and running for this year’s Terry Fox Walk, setting a goal of $5,000 to support the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research.
Students will gather pledges in support of the annual fundraiser, with the walk slated for Wednesday, September 23rd.
Other local schools will host their own walks in support of the foundation.
Terry Fox is a Canadian icon who attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research after losing part of his leg to the disease.
He dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12th, 1980, but he was forced to stop by lung cancer on September 1st, 1980, after having run 5,373 kilometres.
Before his death on June 28, 1981, Fox had achieved his goal of $1 from every Canadian.
The annual Terry Fox Run has raised over 850 million dollars since he first began his run.
