Funding awarded to 12 recipients, eight in the Algoma District

By Rosalind Russell – Area Community Foundations across the north have awarded just over $450,000 to 12 organizations, and eight are located in Algoma.

Area Community Foundation Executive Director Robin Sutherland says the investments are part of the Government of Canada’s Investment Readiness Program.

One of the recipients is the Well Ministries in Blind River to support the Investing in Blind River’s Youth Centre, with the seven others located in Sault Ste. Marie.

The program provides $10,000 to $75,000 to create, manage, and expand social enterprises in order to prepare them for future investment.

This funding has supported 12 projects including the following eight projects in Algoma:

$39,500 to The Well Ministries to support the “Investing in Blind River’s Youth Center” project;

$25,000 to fund Algoma Traditional Music and Dance Group on St. Joseph Island to support the AlgomaTrad Investment Readiness Initiative;

$71,794 to fund the Hearterra refillery in Sault Ste. Marie in support of their zero-waste consumption improvements and expansion;

$25,000 to the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Center to support the development of the Regional Agri-Product Innovation and Development Kitchen;

$55,598 to Strong Minds in Sault Ste. Marie to support the Let’s Make Change Series;

$25,000 to the Lake Superior Watershed Conservancy in Sault Ste. Marie to support the “Past, Present & Future: Canoes For Conservation” project;

$48,000 to Grocer4Good in Sault Ste. Marie to support the “Leveraging the Potential of Grocer 4 Good” project;

$25,000 to The Klub 2SLGBTQIA+ Community Centre in Sault Ste. Marie to support plans for a cafe and retail space.
