By Rosalind Russell – Members of the Espanola Fish and Game Club will join counterparts across the North Shore Corridor for a meeting this week focusing on the federal gun buyback program.
Police services across the North have said no to administering the program.
The federal program states gun owners have until March 31st to declare their interest in receiving compensation for their firearms, and by the end of 2026, it will be a Criminal Code offence to own any of the models the feds have put on the list.
However, many critics including Espanola Game & Fish Club member Leland Morley, says the program will not lower gun crime in Canada, fueled largely by illegal weapons being smuggled into Canada from the United States.
Two MPs, Jim Belanger from the local riding, and Blaine Rankins from Ponoka-Didsbury are hosting in Chelmsford at the 50 Club (25 Main Street West) this Thursday to address the various concerns raised by not only gunowners and affiliated clubs, but also police and the general public.
Registration opens at 5:15.
