By Rosalind Russell – A judge has approved a $10 million settlement following the collapse of the Algo Mall in Elliot Lake on June 23, 2012.
Last Friday afternoon, Justice Benjamin Glustien stated he will be approving the settlement, following a two-hour presentation of the law suit settlement proposal on Zoom, adding he will release a written ruling this week.
Around 300 people impacted by the 2012 collapse will receive financial compensation including shoppers, workers and business owners.
The original suit was launched in 2012, certified a couple of years later, claiming alleged negligence.
The settlement proposal was also endorsed by the Ontario government two weeks ago.
The proposal is expected to receive the court’s endorsement soon with around $4 million going to legal and other administrative costs, and the balance of some $6 million going to the plaintiffs.
None of the defendants are admitting liability as part of the settlement.
Separate lawsuits filed by the families of Lucie Aylwin and Doloris Perizzolo, the two women killed in the collapse, have already been settled.
