Lowering the minimum age for fitness center access in Espanola

By Rosalind Russell – Espanola Council has approved a proposal from the Community and Recreation Department to lower the minimum age for the Fitness Centre located at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

Town clerk Joseph Burke says access to the fitness center, which is located at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex, has always required an adult to accompany anyone 12 years of age or younger.

However, he adds staff recommended lowering that to nine years of age citing other facilities that have done the same.

Burke says the new age limit for youth under 12 will be limited to the poolside auditorium of the center, adding the main objective is to increase the opportunity for entire families to be active together.

He adds upon review of insurance and liability considerations, there are no concerns since the appropriate supervision and orientation strategies are in place at the facility.
