By Rosalind Russell – A Manitoulin Island teen has been selected as one of 36 2023 Loran Scholars, out of a field of nearly 4,800 applicants.

Loran Scholars Foundation communications officer, Roxy Rae says a student at Manitoulin Secondary School, Manitowaning’s own Jocelyn Kuntsi has been successful in her application to be considered a Loran Scholar.

Rae says Kuntsi stood out for her work as Captain of Manitoulin Metal Robotics, and as a school board student trustee, student senate chair, and a lead astronomer at an eco-park.

She points out Kuntsi also received a Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards  recognizing Youth Achievement, is a Shad Alumni, advocates for the environment as a beekeeper, and is engaged in both music and theatre.

Rae adds as a Loran Scholar Kuntsi and her 35 other peers will receive a tuition waiver at one of their 25 university partners, an annual living stipend, mentorship, and summer work experiences.
