By Rosalind Russell – Northern municipal officials are meeting with federal ministers to advance nation-building priorities.
The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities and Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association are in Ottawa for the sessions.
They’re looking to the feds to designate Highways 11 & 17 as nationally significant and for improvements to blend four-laning with 2+1 designs.
They’re also calling for a permanent, fully funded Rural Community Immigration Pilot program, bail reform, a unified One Project, One Process permitting model with natural resources, and more.
Meantime, both groups are expressing concern after Algoma Steel announced a thousand layoffs.
They’re calling on the provincial and federal governments to work with industry and labour partners to address the immediate impact — and take steps to protect and strengthen the steel sector across the North.
