Outdoor learning leads La Renaissance students to GPS certification

By Rosalind Russell – As part of Take Me Outside Week from October 19 to 23, École secondaire catholique La Renaissance (Espanola) students took part in a hands-on outdoor learning experience at Black Creek Sno-Shoe Trail.

Board communication director Amelie Cyr says during the field trip, students from the school’s Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Environment program earned a certification in mapping, compass navigation, and GPS use while exploring geolocation technologies in a real-world setting.

She adds the it brings them one step closer to earning the (SHSM) Red Seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma while helping them build a strong portfolio that showcases their specialized skills and training.

The activity was one of many held across Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon schools throughout, including in Blind River, Elliot Lake and Spanish.

Students participated in a variety of outdoor learning experiences, such as yoga sessions, reading activities, flora and fauna exploration, and nature-inspired art projects.
