Pride Month

By Rosalind Russell – Espanola council will be making an official proclamation and raising the flag in recognition of Pride Month.

Town clerk Joseph Burke says council has declared June as Pride Month in Espanola as part of the town’s annual commitment to raising awareness for equal rights and full equality for individuals locally and globally.

He says the Pride Flag will be raised at the town Hall next Thursday, June 1st.

Pride Month commemorates The Stonewall Inn uprising in 1969 where queer people rioted against police harassment at the bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village.

There is also a new Pride group in Espanola, which will be taking part and plans are in the works for some local events to be held in September with details to be released soon.
