School boards say they are handling insect problem at Espanola schools

By Rosalind Russell – The shared Espanola school facility overseen by the Conseil Scolaire catholique Nouvelon and Huron-Superior Catholic School boards are continuing ongoing monitoring of insects, specifically cockroaches.

Officials say the insect situation was first reported to the parents on Jan. 8 telling them cockroaches had been detected in the kitchen of the childcare facility and Public Health Sudbury & Districts had called for a full inspection of the premises, La Renaissance and Sacred Heart, as well as the childcare facilities.

The kitchen was given a thorough cleaning and traps were installed.

Officials add a pest control company inspected the premises on Jan. 11 and this past Monday, (Jan. 19) to reassess the premises and inspect traps.

The latest report indicates there is no active presence of cockroaches in either school, and as a preventive measure, the monitoring traps will remain installed in certain areas of the school.

Officials say weekly inspections will be happening to reassess and continue treatment as needed.

The Ministry of Health has also been notified.

In collaboration with École catholique La Renaissance and partners, CSC Nouvelon is taking all necessary measures in accordance with the recommendations of Public Health Sudbury & Districts and Abell Pest Control to ensure the facility remains safe and well maintained.

The safety, health and well-being of students and staff remain a top priority.

Both boards state the situation is being monitored closely, and parents are kept informed of any relevant developments.
