Serpent River First Nation elects new chief and council

By Rosalind Russell – Serpent River First Nation has a new chief and council in place following an election this past Saturday.

James Owl handily defeated incumbent chief Wilma-Lee Johnston, receiving 343 votes out of 435 ballots cast. 

Six community members out of a field of 20 were elected to council: George Coughlin, Justin Urquhart, Rebecca Csaszar, Angela Turdeau, Nicole Pelletier and Erin Carne.

Chief and council will serve a four-year-term in compliance with the First Nations Elections Act. 

The First Nation has a total registered population of 1,768 members, with 384 living on the reserve.
