By Rosalind Russell – As of May 30th, stationary Automated Licence Plate Readers (ALPR) are operational in Whitefish River First Nation.
According to the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Police, the cameras help identify licence plates connected to serious investigations—like missing persons, human trafficking, and organized crime—and support public safety efforts across the Manitoulin District.
Plates not flagged are purged after 7 days to protect privacy.
The service adds the system is not for catching speeders or minor traffic violations.
