By Rosalind Russell – More than a quarter of Ontario’s schools experience teacher shortages every day, and nearly half experience daily shortages for educational assistants.
Those stats are from People for Education’s Annual Ontario School Survey, which highlights the issue right across the province.
In their comments in the survey, principals reported it’s common to employ unqualified people to cover the absences, and raised concerns about the impact that is having on the students’ learning.
Among other things… The organization calls for a task force made up of school representatives be created to provide input on government policy before it is implemented… as well as increase funding to boards to hire more EAs and to pay them better.
