W C Eaket prepares to say good-bye – construction continuing on shared school

By Rosalind Russell – The  original W C Eaket Secondary School opened in 1958 as the Blind River High School, and got its new name in 1999, but now it will have a new home.

The high school is hosting two open houses to allow for former staff, students and community members to take a last walk or two, to reminisce, and to acknowledge all the hard work, achievement and friendships inextricably connected to this building.

The two open houses are set for Saturday, May 23 and Saturday, June 13 from 12 noon until 3 p.m.

The Algoma District School Board trustees voted to declare Blind River Public School and W.C. Eaket Secondary School as surplus properties at last month’s board meeting.

The schools are no longer needed by the ADSB as construction of the new Three Rivers JK-12 School in Blind River continues.

Money raised from the sale of surplus property is reinvested back into the board’s capital fund.

Three Rivers School, will be shared by ADSB and Conseil scolaire du Grand Nord on Youngfox Road, which will include 381 JK-12 spaces, 64 daycare spaces and 72 French-language elementary spaces for families in the region

According to the board, the Minister of Education has 120 days to approve the board’s sale or lease of the surplus properties to a preferred list, such as another school board, municipalities or Indigenous groups.

If no interest is shown in the properties within that 120-day period, the board can sell them on the open market.
