By Rosalind Russell – An application to demolish a vacant hospital is under review by the City of Greater Sudbury.
According to Mayor Paul Lefebvre, he had called on property owner, Panoramic Properties, to take immediate action on the building following the discovery of a man’s body inside in May and a suspicious fire a few days later.
His office confirms the city has received an application for a demolition permit, but no specifics as to a time line or other details while it is under review.
However, signage indicating danger due to demolition were posted on the fencing around the building last month and staff have been on the property clearing rubbish and other materials.
The former St. Joseph Hospital, also formerly known as Sudbury General, was built in 1950 and closed its doors in 2010, but it has sat vacant for the last 15 years.
Panoramic Properties shared a plan for the property last year that includes a mix of condos, apartments and retirement spaces, as well as a restaurant and small café with construction to begin within five years.

The Up Here festival commissioned the artist, known as RISK, to paint an 80,000 square foot mural on the old hospital on Paris Street. It is Canada’s largest mural. but the colours have faded and the mural has lost its pizzazz. Photo – YouTube
