Espanola Public Library Expands Lending Collection to Support Active and Engaged Living

By Shylene Berry – Espanola Public Library continues to grow as “a welcoming hub where all come to learn, discover, create, and connect” with the introduction of an expanded collection of non-traditional items, developed to support active lifestyles and independent living—particularly for older adults. This new collection builds on the library’s mission by offering practical, hands-on resources that extend beyond traditional library materials.

Library patrons can now borrow a diverse range of items, including:

  • Health and recreation equipment including walking poles, a bocce set, and portable pickleball net
  • Home and environmental tools such as an energy meter and radon detector
  • Assistive and accessible technology including the Victor Reader Stream 3, Odyssey, Connect 12, and Explore 12
  • Hobby related items such as puzzles, and a DVD player

“This collection reflects our commitment to build our capacity by offering new services and resources” said Espanola Public Library CEO, Laura Luopa. “Whether someone is looking to stay active, try a new hobby, or access adaptive technology, the library can now support that journey.” The initiative is especially meaningful for older adults, offering opportunities to maintain independence, explore new interests, and stay active. Funding for the development of this collection was supported by the Province of Ontario through the Seniors Community Grant Program.

In addition to these new resources, Espanola Public Library continues to offer STEAM kits, Ontario Provincial Park passes, books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, and digital resources for all ages.

Through innovative collections, strong partnerships, and engaging programming, Espanola Public Library continues to strengthen services and ensure that creativity and learning remain at the heart of community life.
